Walk With Earth is a California 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is working to have everyone treat the Earth as the Garden of Eden. This means, seeing trees, animals and all living being as God’s beloved. Our future goals include a walk from California to Chile as a pilgrimage of discovery around the idea of moving society towards a more wholistic world view as opposed to a mechanistic world view where people learn to walk with the Earth rather than simply over it…to remove our sense of seperateness; urban and sustainabile farming activities; faith-based support for education about the natural world; learning to see ourselves as gardeners rather than stewards.

WALK WITH EARTH

A journey of

discoveryTO HONOR THE EARTH
Starting in 1997, Rolene Walker envisioned a project to bring together her personal beliefs and a desire to make a difference in the world. The result was Walk With Earth, which is planned as a pilgrimage on foot from California to Chile, to start in the spring of 2008.
“This is a journey of discovery,” says Rolene. “We aim to exchange information about sustainable practices for caring for the earth that can be shared among people in all of the Americas.”
We see all living beings as related and irreplaceable, and we embrace a holistic world view as opposed to a mechanistic one.
We want to hear the stories and songs from people in all the Americas about the beauty of the places where they live, to acknowledge their sadness about degraded areas and loss of species, to learn the histories and traditions about caring for the earth, and to consider what we can do to make our environment more livable.
We want to honor the ties people in the Americas have to their lands and surroundings. We would like to encourage people to care for the earth as if it were a Garden of Eden and to walk with the Earth rather than simply over it.
We want to remove our sense of separateness, to promote sustainable urban and farming activities, to support education about the natural world, to learn to see ourselves as gardeners of the world’s forests rather than stewards.”

MAKING OUR ENVIRONMENT MORE LIVABLE
A major focus of the walk will be exchanging and gathering information about methods of caring for the earth through our everyday activities, such as biodiesel fuel for automobiles, solar ovens for cooking, simple but effective water purification systems.

ABOUT THE WALK
The walk is expected to take about two and a half years. The passage through Mexico, (Baja California to Mexico City, to the Guatemalan border) approximately one third of the walk, is expected to take about eight months. People who are interested in participating in the walk can join for any portion of the journey. Our web site will have a time line with dates of when we expect to reach different points along the way.

WHO’S GOING?
People who have shown interest in participating in the walk cover a wide range of ages and backgrounds. They include a retired teacher from Mexico, students from the US, Mexico, Canada, and Italy. A group of university students from Guatemala are interested in walking with us and will look for hospitality along the way.
We plan to walk 10 miles a day and visit schools, churches or community groups as well as organizations devoted to improving the environment and people who share our concern for the earth.
Everyone who shares our concern for the earth is welcome to join us, regardless of beliefs or religious affiliation.

ABOUT THE LEADER
Rolene Walker is a North American with long-standing ties to Latin America. Her great-grandfather and his wife left England to homestead on the Isla Grande de Chiloe, Chile, where he milled lumber. Rolene’s grandfather and father were born in Chile and the family came to the U.S. in 1936 when her father was in high school. The family remained in California.
Rolene has a BA degree from the University of California and did graduate work at California State University at Los Angeles. She has taught Spanish, English as a Second Language and Sociology and has traveled extensively in Latin America as well as in Europe and Asia. She has lived in Bogota, Colombia where she taught English and in Mexico City where she was the Labor Attaché at the US Embassy. She retired in January, 2007 from her job in San Francisco at the US Department of Labor, where she was a manager for the Wage Hour Division, which investigates companies for compliance with labor laws.
She is active in a number of Quaker organizations where she has had leadership and teaching roles. She is presently on the board of directors of a Quaker Peace Center and Hostel in Mexico City. She has served as a simultaneous interpreter at an international conference in England.
She lives in San Francisco and has two grown sons who live in California. She likes to sing and she plays the Celtic harp. And she likes to walk.

“We feel very spiritually connected to the Walk With Earth as members of the Peace for Earth Walk. We see our Quaker Walk from Vancouver, BC to San Diego and Rolene’s part from San Diego to Santiago de Chile as all one walk. We are pleased to know that Rolene is emphasizing the beauty of the earth in a way that complements what we are doing. We encourage people to support Walk With Earth financially and with your prayers.”
Ruah Swennerfelt, Quaker Earthcare Witness

  3. thanks so much for the updates and fotos, and more importantly, for getting out there and Doing It! I actively support a deeper analysis of the national political situation, and a rejection of war, in a weekly demonstration here in our town in CA. In the past i have walked long distances in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and am considering tagging along eventually…….my family and I lived for many years as small farmers in Chiloe, Chile…and have been active in many environmental and alternative tech projects….Abrazos to all the walkers!!!
